MARY MONROE
Mary Monroe's professional life has been based on creating solutions in a variety of unique ways to support and develop creative artists.
She has been devoted to the development of new work in support of playwrights and performing artists in particular, nationally and internationally, and has created several national and New York City based nonprofit companies and programs to benefit thousands of artists, across mediums, from college students to accomplished professionals. In 1979, Mary started working in professional regional theatres, following a professional path from a Directing intern, to Assistant to the Artistic Director, to Director of New Works, to Associate Artistic Director and Artistic Director. In 1983, Mary moved to New York City to pursue work as a freelance director. She became a full SDC (Union) Stage Director and a Nonprofit Producer in 1989. A sampling of places she has worked include: Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Public (New York Shakespeare Festival), LaMama E.T.C., Provincetown Playhouse, Circle East (formerly Circle Rep Lab), H.E.R.E., New Dramatists, Nat Horne Theater (NYC Theatre Row), BACA/Downtown, Indiana Rep., North Light Rep. (now: Northlight). While pursuing the work noted above, Mary also worked with graduate playwriting and screenwriting students as a Professional Director/Adjunct with NYU Tisch School of the Arts Dramatic Writing Program, and served as a Regional Playwriting Chair for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. She has been fortunate to work with well-known / legendary artists, too. Mary has been a Board President of several NYC and national nonprofit arts organizations devoted to supporting performing artists, and she has received a number of honors, including the Kennedy Center Bronze Medal, elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), a recipient of a Theatre Communications Group Observership, and more. She is a full graduate of RADA. |
